Over 450 hours of mediation training, beginning in 1994. My mediation training began at Stanford University in 1994 with Gary Friedman, and continued with the Center for Mediation in Law; Pepperdine University, Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution; the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California; California Court of Appeal; Association for Conflict Resolution; San Francisco Community Boards; Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center; and others. Other
Education:

J. D. university of California at Berkeley (Boalt Hall), May, 1978.
B. A. Psychology, Stanford University, 1975.
Mediation
Approach:

My mediation style varies with the needs and interest of the parties and attorneys in each case. I conduct an initial phone conference to set up the mediation and discuss the needs of the case. I request written briefs 10 days before the date of the mediation, and I have additional individual phone conversations after reviewing the briefs in order to prepare for the mediation and further explore the best way to tailor the mediation to the needs of each case and the individual parties involved in the dispute. I have found that approaching the mediation with genuine interest and curiosity, and being ready and able to acknowledge and work with people’s emotions during the mediation, helps people to successfully resolve their dispute. I begin the mediation with a primarily facilitative approach, and as the mediation progresses, I assist the parties and their counsel to evaluate their case and consider and weigh their options for resolution.

Other

Brief
Thumbnail:

With 32 years of litigation experience and over 450 hours of mediation training, I currently focus on the mediation of litigated cases and community disputes. In 2004, I changed my focus from litigation to mediation because I believe that mediation is a powerful and respectful way for people to resolve disputes; I have seen that providing people with the opportunity to voice their own views and understand the views of others involved in disputes provides a valuable, respectful and efficient way to resolve disputes. My strengths as a mediator include patience, respect, creativity, energy, persistence, strong people skills, excellent client rapport, and a strong belief in the value of the mediation process.
